The Margate Bookshop is looking for a part-time bookseller to join our small team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone to become a part of a much-loved local, independent business and share their passion for books with our many customers.

We have a weekend vacancy available starting in October. Candidates must be able to work every Saturday and alternating Sundays, with occasional weekday shifts also available. Previous bookselling experience is not essential but a background in retail and hospitality is strongly preferred. This is a nine-month maternity cover position with potential to carry on after that period.

The Margate Bookshop is a fast-paced working environment, particularly during the summer season and on weekends. We operate as a very small team, committed to providing the best experience for our customers, be they local or day-trippers.

An extensive knowledge of classic and contemporary fiction is not a prerequisite but candidates must have an enthusiasm for learning the fine art of book recommendations and must have experience working within a team.

Initial day to day responsibilities include:

Serving customers at the till
Recommending books
Keeping the shop clean, tidy and organised
Processing customer orders
Answering enquiries over the phone
Keeping our social media and website up to date
Making teas and coffees

Candidates must have these essential attributes:

A general love of reading with an interest in learning about new titles
An approachable and friendly nature
Experience working in customer-facing roles
Good time management and an ability to multitask
Organisational and administrative skills
Desire to work in a close-knit team as well as being confident working alone
A detail-driven approach with an ability to use initiative

The hourly wage is £12.50. Please also let us know where you are based.
