OVERNIGHT WITH DAN RICHARDS | WEDNESDAY, 18 MARCH
Author Dan Richards discusses his illuminating new book Overnight, an intrepid personal journey into 'the who and the how' of the nocturnal world
7:00pm-9:00pm Fort Road Bar
At once a mood piece and a personal journey into 'the who and the how' of the nocturnal world, Dan Richards' new book Overnight finds him celebrating a plethora of nighttime wildlife, travel, dreams and art. There is something supernatural about the night, whether that's the magic of starlit skies, romance or rest, or on the darker side, danger, vulnerability and sleeplessness. For many people and animals alike, nightfall signals movement and activity; owls and bats take flight, foxes prowl and bakers, sailors and emergency service colleagues get to work. From night terror chills to the warmth of dawn on the summer solstice, and from medics to Moomins to Michael Fassbender, Overnight leaves no stone unturned.
Dan Richards is a writer, biographer and broadcaster. He is author of Climbing Days, Outpost, and The Beechwood Airship Interviews and co-author of Holloway (with Robert Macfarlane and Stanley Donwood). Only After Dark, his BBC Radio 4 series about the nocturnal world, was broadcast to acclaim in 2022, with a follow-up set to air later this year. Dan will be talking about Overnight in conversation with writer, theatre producer and arts consultant Amber Massie-Blomfield whose latest book, Acts of Resistance: The Power of Art to Create a Better World is out now.
