UP IN THE AIR WITH HOLLY SMITH | THURSDAY, 6 NOVEMBER
Historian Holly Smith discusses her new book Up in the Air, a panoramic human history of high-rise council housing in Britain
7:00pm-9:00pm Fort Road Bar
Taking a residents' eye view of the multi-storey... um, story of the UK's most divisive buildings - that is, its high-rise public housing - Up in the Air shows how these towers became totems of the welfare state as it was reimagined over decades, for better or worse. Author Holly Smith homes in on the communities that have rallied for and against the construction of urban blocks from the 1950s to the present day; the grass-roots activists, tenants co-operatives and reality TV pensioners raising their voices in the ongoing fight for housing justice.
Dr Holly Smith is an award-winning architectural historian of modern Britain. She'll be discussing Up in the Air, her first book, with Dan Thompson, a writer, curator, social artist and director at Marine Studios in Margate.
Tickets are free and available via Eventbrite.
